Fort Aguada is unarguably one of the most important historical monuments of Goa. It sits majestically in the southern end of Candolim Beach. Needless to say, it is today one of the primary tourist attractions of Candolim Beach. Hence it is not completely wrong to say that Fort Aguada played a very important role in changing the course of Goa’s destiny.
Portuguese had begun building this fort in the beginning of 17th century and is believed to have completed the construction of this fort in the year 1613. The purpose of this fort was to thwart any possible sea attack by Portuguese enemies, especially by Marathas and Dutch. And true to its purpose, Fort Aguada helped Portuguese in consolidating their control over Old Goa for once and ever. Although there are no historical records to suggest there was any strong invasion of Old Goa after 17th century, but the sheer presence of this fort surely enabled Portuguese to rule Old Goa with immense confidence.
And as for the structure and architecture is concerned, then it is immensely huge in size. Although from outset it looks little underwhelming, but once you’re inside the fort you’ll eventually realize how big it is and will also appreciate how strategically this fort has been constructed. To give you just an idea about how big this fort is, during it’s hey days it used to be stationed with more than 100 canons. And during it’s hey days this fort also had Asia’s largest well, which stored staggering 2,376,000 gallons of water. The present condition of this well is, however, in a very ruined condition and has almost lost all its yesteryear sheen.
And finally about lighthouse that you’ll invariably witness once you’re inside Fort Aguada. Though current condition of this lighthouse is also not that good, but it surely lends a captivating aura to this place. Besides, it is one of the few lighthouses that are located in Goa.
